STEM Sports has been a game changer for many PE programs across the country, as the curriculum fosters physical literacy with lessons designed for the physically active learner by taking students out of the traditional classroom setting and into the gym or on to the field. Yet just as important, lessons nurture the mental and emotional wellness of students by way of positive interaction with their peers through collaborative lessons that support friendship and teamwork.
STEM Soccer Lesson Example
The STEM Soccer lesson plan below from the STEM Sports Multi-Sport Kit is a sneak peek into the ease of integrating a STEM Sports lesson into a health and/or physical education lesson plan. The structure of this lesson, and all STEM Sports lessons, provide flexibility in implementation, allowing teachers to adjust the amount of time spent on each sport or STEM component based on the specific needs of their classroom/school. STEM Sports lessons come equipped with all of the resources you would need, including – worksheets, assessments, sports equipment, and science /academic materials. This means teachers can focus more on the teaching, and less on the preparation! The STEM Sports curriculum truly empowers Health/PE teachers to seamlessly blend physical education with STEM concepts effortlessly and effectively.
The Symmetry of STEM and PE
As a former physical education teacher and curriculum writer using IB (International Baccalaureate) standards, my goal was to utilize standards that exercise the body and mind for the overall well-being of each student. Uniformly, our goal at STEM Sports is to do the same: Effectively reach all students using standards that connect the dots between STEM and Physical Education. By incorporating and aligning subject matter (Science and/or Math) to physical education, students begin to witness the symmetry of learning and fun, and in turn, feel empowered to learn and retain more in the classroom, on the court or field.
