8 Ways to Help Build Character in PE with StrongSelf™ Equipment

The StrongSelf™ line from Gopher is a powerful way to seamlessly reinforce positive behaviors while incorporating meaningful reflection into everyday physical activity. The classic six-color set features the traits Honesty, Respect, Inclusive, Empathy, Leadership, and Kindness. Each trait is printed on one side of the ball, with its definition printed on the other providing an instant conversation starter built directly into the equipment.

This versatile set can be used across grade levels and in countless ways to elevate both movement and mindset.

1. Reflection After Small-Sided Games

StrongSelf Basketball

Before students rotate have them pause and reflect on the specific trait printed on the equipment. Ask them to share examples of how that trait was demonstrated during gameplay.

At the end of class, select three of the colors and ask students to recall some of the strongest reflections they heard throughout the lesson. This reinforces listening, accountability, and ownership of behavior, not just performance.

2. Reflection After Recess

Extend the impact beyond the gym by partnering with classroom teachers and recess supervisors. Let staff know the StrongSelf™ traits are printed on the equipment and encourage them to facilitate a brief reflection conversation after recess:

  • Did you see this trait during play today?
  • Who demonstrated it well?
  • How did it improve the game?

These short conversations can strengthen student–staff relationships while elevating the overall character of play and school culture.

3. Gamification Concepts

Because each StrongSelf™ trait is clearly tied to a color, the equipment naturally supports gamification. Teachers can structure levels, challenges, or class goals around the traits, allowing students to progress not only in skill development but also in character growth. The consistent use of color and terminology keeps expectations clear and reinforces language that can carry across multiple units throughout the year.

  • Red Level (Honesty): Complete a set of drills while demonstrating honest scoring.
  • Yellow Level (Inclusive): Level up by including new partners and helping others succeed.
  • Blue Level (Leadership): Earn the level by leading a warm‑up or helping run a station.

As students progress through units, they are not just advancing skill, they’re advancing character. The language becomes consistent, visible, and meaningful throughout the year.

4. Stations and Task Cards

The six colors and traits make station work instantly organized and easy to manage. Tasks can be clearly assigned:

  • “Complete the balance challenge with the Red Honesty equipment.”
  • “Show Yellow Inclusive behaviors at this passing station.”

This structure allows teachers to quickly assess both skill execution and understanding of behavioral expectations—all while keeping students engaged and active.

5. The Talking Piece

Many schools dedicate time each day to character building learning. What better way to advocate for physical education than by placing StrongSelf™ equipment in the classroom as a talking piece?

When students hold a ball with the day’s focus printed right on it, the connection between movement and mindset becomes tangible. Even simply having PE equipment in the classroom environment reinforces the value of physical activity and keeps wellness visible throughout the school day.

6. All Sports Golf

Students choose which StrongSelf™ ball to throw, kick, or bounce toward the “hole,” reflecting on the trait they selected and how it relates to their strategy or teamwork.

7. Scavenger Hunts

Students search for equipment labeled with specific traits and complete a related fitness task before moving on.

8. Large-Group Mindfulness with the Parachute

Use the traits to guide breathing, cooperation, and communication challenges.

StrongSelf™ traits are printed on a variety of equipment, allowing those values to become consistent, recognizable, and embedded across multiple units and standards throughout the year. When character language is visible, active, and practiced, not just posted on a wall, it becomes part of who students are!
