16 STEM in the Gym Activities with Makey Makey

STEM in the Gym

What is Makey Makey and why do I use it? Makey Makey, an invention kit everyone can use, is an electronic invention tool and toy that allows students to connect everyday objects to computer programs. Makey Makey is a printed circuit board that has a microcontroller running Arduino, which allows it to interface between your computer (via USB) and physical objects (via alligator clips). (Makey Makey, 2018). Students program the movements they want associated with which keys into a computer, and clip the objects to the corresponding holes on the board. When they push on the aluminum foil wrapped poly spot, the computer thinks they’re pressing a key and plays a sound, advances a counter, or moves a computer image. Makey Makey is a great tool that can be used for STEM in the gym.

In the Spring or 2018, my school received a grant for 15 sets of Makey Makey boards. We had a 4th grade classroom teacher and a 5th grade classroom teacher try them out and see what their classes could create. During the summer STEM camp, I volunteered to incorporate the Makey Makey boards into my STEM in the Gym sessions. The objective was to give these campers, in grades K-5, the basics of the Makey Makey boards. Once the school year begins, I know our teachers will introduce the Makey Makey boards to the rest of the school. My campers will already understand how the Makey Makey boards work and be able to assist their classroom teachers. In this article I will provide the different station ideas we developed to use in our STEM in the Gym sessions, along with the equipment needed, setup, Makey Makey board setup, expectations, guidelines, website utilization, and possible modifications.

Plank Walk Challenge

PlankWalkChallenge

Directions for Making Your Own Stomp Pads

StompPads

Equipment Needed: Foam Floor Mat, Aluminum Tape, Hot Glue Gun, Electrical Wire, Electrical Tape, Wire Strippers, Scissors, and Alligator Clips.

Setup: Cut your foam floor mat to the desired size. Mine are 10”L x8”W. Strip the ends of two 3’L pieces of electrical wire. Choose your bottom pad. Line the center section of the floor mat with aluminum tape. Cut a 4”L piece of extra foam mat and aluminum tape that to the center of the foam mat. Aluminum tape the exposed end of copper wire to the edge of the foam bump. Choose your top pad. Line the center section of the top mat with aluminum tape. Aluminum tape the exposed end of a new copper wire on the previous aluminum tape. Build a foam edge trim around the perimeter of the bottom and top pieces. Save space for the wire. Use a hot glue gun to secure the trim to the top and bottom pieces. Let dry. Use a hot glue gun to secure the top and bottom pieces together. Electrical tape the two wires together. Connect an alligator clip to the other ends of the two wires and electrical tape those together. That makes 1 stop pad. Make 3 more to complete your set.

I was able to make 3 sets of red, blue, yellow, & green following this YouTube video, or I would create the original foot touch pads but I would make them on a desk and have the students touch the poly spots with their hands to control the Makey Makey movements.

Makey Makey is an engaging, interactive use of technology that allows students to really invent. Taking Makey Makey and using it for STEM in the gym will really blow the minds of your students. Hopefully your imagination has begun to modify these activities to meet the needs of your student population.

  1. I think Makey Makey Gym Class is very interesting for all people of age. Anybody can have fun playing these games, for example: Scooter Laps Challenge is a way people can have fun exercise and play video games at the same time. Around the World a very popular known basketball game that people play all over the world now they can have fun playing it also as a video game. Racket Skills, if you like Tennis then you would also like thins game probably even more because it’s so interactive. Human Piano, another game where you have to run and get exercise just to play a piano on a video game. Plank Walk, a Plank is a very popular exercise where people build up upper body strength now you can do it while playing a game. Push-Up, in my opinion a Push-Up is the best way to build up Bicep strength so if you child doesn’t get enough exercise because all he does is play video games then have him play this video game for a change. Wide Grip Push-Up, a *WIDER* version of a Push-Up, it takes more strength so you will gain more strength. Modified Curl-Up, do a Curl-Up and you will have better lower body strength down by your abs. Frogger, arcade games is a great way to get your kid going even if he doesn’t like exercising playing an arcade game that makes you exercise than he’ll sure have fun. Iron Man VS. Captain America, if you like Marvel then playing this game while exercising will make you stronger while enjoying your favorite Marvel characters. Pac-Man, if you loved Pac-Man when you were younger or are a kid who loves Pac-Man because you think he’s cool then playing Makey Makey Gym Class version will make you love him even more. Musical Oranges and Water Bowls, if you like or “love” interactive arcade games than the following will be for you. Straddle Jump, Step-Up and Jumping Arrows Challenge.
