Crossroads Christian Academy (CCA) in Panama City, Panama, began in 1997 when a small group of American missionaries, pastors, and parents from Crossroads Bible Church (CBC) started the school. Initially, the school had only 29 students enrolled in Kindergarten through eighth grade. Today, CCA has grown significantly, now serving over 167 students from Pre-K through twelfth grade. With approximately 22 nationalities represented, including students from Belgium, Canada, China, Colombia, and many other countries, CCA creates a vibrant international environment where sports and physical activities unite everyone.
Meet Mr. Gustavo Martínez
Mr. Gustavo Martínez, the school’s dedicated PE teacher, has been teaching at CCA for three years. Originally from Cuba, Mr. Martínez has spent his career coaching baseball teams and training PE teachers. He says, “I bring my love for sports, especially baseball, to every class. Seeing students grow and improve is the best part of my job.”
A Look at the PE Program
CCA’s PE program is carefully designed for each grade level:
- Kindergarten to Grade 2: Students enjoy 30-minute PE classes three times a week, playing games that help build coordination and teamwork.
- Grades 3 to 4: These students also participate in three weekly 30-minute classes, starting to learn organized games and explore various sports.
- Grades 5 to 10: Older students attend five 45-minute classes per week, focusing on advanced skills in sports such as baseball, soccer, volleyball, indoor hockey, and swimming.
Unique Sports and Activities
PE at CCA goes beyond traditional sports like soccer or basketball. Mr. Martínez includes unique activities like indoor hockey and swimming. Baseball, Panama’s national sport, also plays a significant role. “It’s exciting to watch students practice their batting, catching, and pitching skills,” Mr. Martínez explains. “They feel proud learning a sport deeply connected to Panama.”
Purchasing Equipment at an International School
Mr. Martínez recommends quality equipment from GOPHER, noting their excellent prices and reliable service. “I’ve had positive experiences ordering through AMISA, and GOPHER equipment has been consistently excellent,” he says.
Favorite Equipment
Students at CCA love using various sports equipment, including:
- Hula hoops
- Jump ropes
- Baseball bats
- Volleyballs
- Soccer balls
- Basketballs
“Our students really enjoy equipment like hula hoops and jump ropes,” says Mr. Martínez. “They have fun while improving their physical skills and coordination.”
Bringing Local Culture into PE
Incorporating local culture into PE lessons is important at CCA. Soccer has grown popular, but Mr. Martínez emphasizes baseball. “By teaching baseball step by step, students connect with Panama’s culture and history,” he says. “It’s important for them to understand and appreciate local traditions.”
Overcoming Challenges Together
Teaching PE in an international school setting has unique challenges. Mr. Martínez emphasizes creating realistic expectations and a supportive learning environment. “Knowing each student’s strengths and weaknesses helps us build a supportive, collaborative atmosphere,” he says. “Everyone feels encouraged and motivated.”
Leaving a Lasting Impact
Mr. Martínez hopes students remember their PE experiences fondly. “I want them to remember the games, friendships, discipline, and teamwork we build together,” he says. “Most importantly, I hope they leave CCA as better citizens, ready to make a positive impact in their communities.”
At Crossroads Christian Academy, PE is about more than physical activity. It’s about growth, learning, and celebrating cultures through sport.
